I transcribed the 1850 Federal Census of Jackson County, WV in 2000, and placed it on the USGenWeb Census Project pages. One of their requirements is that the transription be exactly as the original, no spelling or name corrections. I realize that this is a problem, because some of the spellings are nothing like present day names. The writing on the original varied from good to really poor as did the quality of the microfilm. The style of letters changed from line to line, and it was often difficult to determine what the name should be. Other times, it was obvious, but letters were left out - Sarh instead of Sarah or Mary might be written with the middle letters so run together that it looked more like May. I have attempted to correct some of the more obvious problems here, hoping to make this a more useful tool.
It is my goal to connect the names on this census to the names in my database. As with the rest of this site, this is an ongoing project.
