Sayre, were drowned in Cow Run about two miles from Cottageville. Tom was the eldest of the two who was about eighteen, was helping some parties "drift" logs out of Cow Run, and Will his brother, about fourteen years old, was along just to have some fun. It seems that Will and a boy by the name of Bennett, made them a raft, composed of three logs with a board tacked across them and pushed out into the water and helped shove the loose logs down the backwater towards the main creek. While they engaged and while having a great deal of sport, Will fell off into the water and Tom, who was a short distance above, ran to him over the loose logs between the two rafts, and pulled him on his small raft, but just then the frail bark separated, and seeing Tom in danger, threw his younger brother towards shore and jumped in the water and caught him and swam with him a short distance - but the load was to heavy for this brave brother, for when just within a few feet of the shore, both boys sank never to rise again. Their bodies were recovered in a short time, but the spark of life had flown never to be re-kindled in this world, and the lifeless bodies of Tom and Will Sayre, were taken home to their distracted parents, that home which they had left one hour before, full of promise and with prospects of a long life. [unreadable] evening all that was mortal of these lovely and promising boys was conveyed to Otterbein Cemetery, followed by fully five hundred sorrowing and sympathizing relatives and friends, and there amid our tears we buried them with all our hopes in them to await the call of the Master. The grief stricken parents have the sympathy of the whole community.
