Charles Eugene Fisher, who wrote a daily column on foreign events that appeared on Page 2 of The New York World-Telegram and The Sun under the by-line of Gene Fisher, died yesterday shortly after having reported for work at the newspaper at 6 a.m. He would have been 55 years old on March 27.
Mr. Fisher had arrived at the office from his home in Middletown, Pa, where he spent weekends. During the week, he had a residence in Larchmont, N.Y.
Mr. Fisher, who was born in Jarvisville, W.Va,. served with the Marine Corps in World War I. After his discharge, he attended the University of Missouri, where he played football.
His newspaper career began in 1925, when he joined the Scripps-Howard chain, on The Memphis Press. Later, he served as city editor of The Press-Scimitar in Memphis. After holding that office on the Baltimore Post, he became assistant city editor of The Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Mr. Fisher was an associate editor of Newsweek magazine before coming to The World-Telegram in New York as telegraph editor in 1942. He started his column, titled "The World Over" and based on press association reports from abroad, in 1948. It appeared Monday through Friday.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Troop Fisher, and three children, Jane Belle, Michael and Jack Fisher.
