This is dedicated to the author, John A House, one of Jackson County's finest genealogists.
We all moan and groan and wish that someone had written down something - like birthdates and full names, maybe even a wedding date and who the parents of the happy couple were. We are thrilled to find a cemetery from 200 years ago, with stones standing and still legible.
John House has given us a little of what we ask for. In a time of uncertain records - I suppose you could almost say non-existent records - Mr House tramped the hills and creeks of Jackson County and the surrounding area, talking to anyone who would stop a bit and oblige him, asking about who used to live here, when did they come, where did they come from, who were their kids? He roamed the cemeteries, making notes of what was written on stones that no longer stand today - 2001.
John House was my kinda guy. The bug that bit him took a big bite out of me. I am more grateful than words can express for this book of his. It was never 'published', it was only after his death that his daughters had his 'notes' typed up and donated a copy to the Jackson County Library. There are mistakes herein. I don't know if he wrote it down wrong, or maybe the typist couldn't read it or just made a mistake. But those mistakes are few, as far as I can find. If you find one, please let me know, giving your sources, and I'll add your comments to the "We think this is correct" page.

To make it quicker to load, I have separated the book into sections (larger type), with links to the sketches therein (smaller type). There is family infomation throughout the book, and too many names for me to want to index it further! It's fascinating reading, but if you're in a hurry, you can use your browser's 'find' feature to search for your names.
The book is arranged in geographical order, following the 'cricks' and runs and valleys. You may find who you seek in more than one place.
My thanks to my daughter, Karen, who helped with the typing - and enjoyed reading it as she went along. I hope you enjoy it as much.
