- Jackson County Past and Present by Carroll Eugene Rhodes, Ripley, WV
I was born in Jackson County on April 14, 1933; my name is Carroll Eugen Rhodes. My grandparents are Samuel and Roxie Rhodes; my parents are Clayton Harlan Rhodes and Mazie Rhodes. My father grew up in the Belgrove area of Jackson County. Clayton and Mazie were married in 1927 in Kanawha County’ Mazie died in 1935. Her parents were Benny Rhodes And Rebecca Southall. Our family moved to the Perry Parsons farm on Given Road.
I do not remember ever seeing my mother; I was two years old when she died. I was premature and was so tiny when I was , that I had to be carried around in a shoebox. I was a young boy when we moved to Jackson County, I lived there until I went to Florida to work building homes. I was married in 1966 to Phyllis Jean Parrish.
Phyllis Jean was born on September 14, 1937 in Akron, Ohio and was the daughter of Charles and Nancy Parsons Parrish. We had no children and enjoyed going to the Senior Center. We lived at Tanglewood Villa for some time. After being married for 29 years, Phyllis died on June 23, 2009. We both enjoyed our many nieces and nephews and their children.
I live at the Caring Place in Ripley and enjoy going to the Senior Center and seeing my friends there.
