VIENNA - Lowell D. Pitchford, 89, of Vienna died Feb. 19, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

Lowell was born Feb. 1, 1915, in Liberty, W.Va., a son of the late Devirgle L. and Clara E. Pitchford. Most of his working life was spent in the natural gas business, first with Columbia Carbon, then with Gas Transport, Inc., from which he retired as president in 1979.
Lowell graduated from Ripley High School and attended the School of Mines at West Virginia University. As a young man Lowell played high school football and club-league baseball.

Later in life Lowell enjoyed bowling and golfing, golf becoming his main avocation during his retirement years in Florida. Lowell was one of the original designers of the Par Mar Pines golf course, now Golf Club of WV, and once served as a marshal at the U.S. Open Golf Tournament.

Survivors include his wife, Oreta Mae Pitchford, whom he married on Oct. 20, 1938; one son, Stephen L. Pitchford and his wife, Ann, of Vienna; one grandson, Darren L. Pitchford of Parkersburg; and two brothers, Cameron Pitchford of Las Cruces, N.M., and Rex Pitchford of Pittsburgh, Pa. He is also survived by his long-time companion and friend, Glenda Hendrickson of Vienna, who helped and cared for him for many years.

In addition to his parents, Lowell was preceded in death by an infant daughter; two sisters; and five brothers.

In accordance with his wishes, his body will be cremated and there will be neither visitation nor a funeral service.

While Lowell enjoyed good health for most of his life, he did suffer vision problems from macular degeneration in his later years.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Macular Degeneration Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 531313, Henderson, NV 89053.
