Mary J. Harpold obit from the Jackson Herald of July 6, 1917.

      Mrs. Mary J. Harpold
The passing away of this aged lady, of which due notice was given in last week's Herald, deserves more than the usual mention of the departed.
Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Stewart and was born on Parchment, Jackson County, July 15, 1836, and died at Ripley, June 28, 1917. She was married to John Wesley Harpold in March, 1854, to which union eight children were born, of whom three died in infancy. She is survived by four sons, C.F. of Clarksburg; E.S. of Massilon, O.; J.M. of Akron, O.; F.J. of Ripley; and one daughter, Mrs Sallie E. Sayre of Mason County, also two brothers, N.M. and R.R. Stewart, of Ripley, and one sister, Mrs. L.M. Davis, of Huntington.
Mother Harpold belonged to that class of pioneers which, alas, will sonn be gone, which fact is more significant than we seem to think. She saw this country develop from the primitive to the present stage, which is far removed from the primitive. She lived in a day when courage of the hero and heroine type was indispensible, in a day when sacrifice and service were badly needed, and she was in these respects not found wanting, but was abundant in labours of love and mercy; in a day when wives and mothers felt to a tremendous degree the responsibility that was theirs.
The Harpold home near Mt. Moriah was "the preachers' home" and not only this, but large numbers were housed and fed on church occasions. "All will be welcome to go with us" was the Harpold invitation given out at church in these good old days. Like her mother, Mother Harpold "went about doing good."
The deceased was a chrisitan most of her long life and a member of the Methodist church somme 58 years.
The writer visited her regularly during the last few months of her earthly career and found her living in the midst of the fragrance of the many good and kind deeds of the past.
The immense crowd which attended the funeral services, which were held at Mt. Moriah on Sunday morning, July 1, attested in a most emphatic way to the high esteem in which the deceased was held.
The funeral sermon was preached by the writer (her pastor for nearly six years) from Job 16:32, after which the remains were tenderly borne to their last resting place by her four sons and two grand-sons, which was indeed very fitting.
A good and noble daughter, sister, and wife, a devoted and loving mother, a kind and sacrificing neighbor and friend has gone from our view, has cross the narrow device where? No use to ask where, because those who knew how she lived know where.
