RUSSELLVILLE — Josephine Cates Landis, 95, of Russellville, died Feb. 27, 2010, at a Newburgh, Ind. nursing home.
The Logan County native was born Dec. 13, 1914, to the late John Green Cates and Laura Duncan Cates. She was married to the late Sherman “Pete” Landis of Olney, Ill. As a young woman, Ms. Landis was employed at the Singer Company in both Bowling Green and Evansville, Ind. It was in Evansville where she wrote a column called “Shopping with Sue” for several years with the Evansville Courier & Press. She was also employed with the McCurty Hotel in Evansville. In 1937, she was employed in Russellville at the Inetta Cleaners owned and operated at that time by Arthur Clevenger. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Temple.
Funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Young Funeral Home, Russellville chapel, with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to United Methodist Temple, The Agape Foundation or The Gideons.
Survivors include a son, Harry Donald Stanton and his wife, Ellen, of Butler, Ohio; a daughter, Annie Laura Gregg and her husband, Dr. Robert E., of Newburgh; a brother, J.G. Cates and his wife, Nancy, of Russellville; two sisters, Laura Lee Stuart, of Russellville, and Louise Brock, of Columbia; two grandsons, James Robert Gregg and his wife, Janet, and Andrew Harris Gregg and his wife, Cheryl; a granddaughter, Catherine Ann Pease and her husband, Jeff; three great-grandsons, Joshua Ryan Gregg, Michael Wolf and Tanner Pease; a great-granddaughter, Samantha Wolf; and several cherished nieces and nephews.
