    • Henry Staats
      Birth: 1888
      Death: 1907

      Turon Weekly Press
      July 11,1907
      Turon ,Kansas

Henry E. Staats was born in Jackson County,West Virginia February 18,1887, came with parents to Kansas April 4, 1896,and lived in Turon and vicinity until about eighteen months ago, when he went to Harlan, Smith county,Kansas to work in a flour mill. The 2nd of July he and Mr Smith, one of the millers were out bathing as they often had done before. Henry stepped off where it was out of his depth. Mr Smith tried to save him but his struggles were so violent that after he had nearly drowned Mr Smith he was obliged to
shake him off thinking he would catch him when he came up, but he never saw him until twelve hours later.
The body was shipped to Turon July 5th. After the funeral which was preached in the M.E. church by Rev. J.W. Wilstead at 2 p.m.,he was interred in the Neola cemetery by the side of one brother and twin sisters that had preceded him.
His age at the time of death was 20 years,4 months and 13 days. He leaves a father and mother, four brothers and sisters to mourn this this loss. Death is in the land and this should be a warning especially to the young to be ready to meet God. For how sudden they, like Henry, may have to meet their Maker. Henry had many friends here and at the place he worked he was well thought of in that vicinity. For as the poet has said,"Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face" so we hope that in this sad bereavement God may work out much good so that it may be said that poor Henry has not died in vain.
