Daughter of Powhatan and Elizabeth Seaman Carter, Catherine Jane “Kitty” Carter died in Hancock County, Indiana. She had married George Heath 26 June 1881. She died of consumption at age 27. Daughter of Elizabeth Seaman and Powhatan Carter. She had married in Lewis County, Kentucky and her death was announced in the Vanceburg, Kentucky newspaper. I got her death certificate from Hancock, County to confirm a family story about Lt. George W. Seaman, CSA visiting the family and hiding “important papers” in the baby clothes of a child there in case his brother David G. Seaman came to arrest him. The story went on to say the kid was put on a boat going down the river so she couldn’t talk. Well, she was too young to talk but her brother William was older, and probably could tell. They did get on a boat, but went back UP the Ohio River to Jackson County, West Virginia. George’s Army records show he was AOL in Kentucky at this time, which I believe was on the occasion of Catharine Seaman’s last illness or her death in Nov. 1862. There may be some errors in this story because of Jackson and Roane County name confusion. Thomas Seaman bought his land in Clarksburg, Kentucky in 1858. [fromMarilyn Steber
