He was a retired physician and surgeon and former owner of Staats Hospital and Clinic in Charleston. A World War II veteran, he was a member of Charleston Lodge 153 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Mason, Beni Kedem Shrine, member of American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, West Virginia Medical Society, Kanawha Medical Society, Charleston Figure Skating Club, member of the staff at St. Francis Hospital and past member of the board of directors of Bank of West Virginia. He earned a bachelor of science degree at West Virginia University and his medical degree at the University of Louisville. Survivors: wife, Catherine Thornburg Staats, Charleston; daughter, Mrs. Ann Staats Brant, Shelby, N. C.; son, Charles Edgar Staats, Jr., Charleston, S. C.: sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Sullivan, Santa Rosa, Calif., Mrs. Catherine Beddow, Valparaiso, Ind.; six grandchildren. Funeral service will be Thursday at Bartlette-Burdette-Cox Chapel, 11 a.m with the Rev. Lawton Posey officiating. Burial will follow at the Staats, Sayre Cemetery, Evans. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the West Virginia Garden Club, Rhododendron Scholarship Fund, in care of Mrs. William F. Ashford, 2004 Donald Ave., Huntington, WV 25701. Flesher, who was born January 25, 1879. To this union were born the following five children, Katherine, born August 1, 1902; Beverly Waugh, born May 23, 1905; Elizabeth, born July 11, 1908; Charles Edgar, born December 9, 1909; Harlan Herbert, born October 8, 1917. Dr Harlan Staats was in service during the recent World War. He held the rand of Captain in the Medical corps of the Unites States Army. Dr Staats is one of the best surgeons in West Virginia. He has charge of the Roane County hospital, which is situated at Spencer, West Virginia.
