Dear Mother,
It has been some time since I wrote to you all at home. I have been in hospital since October 14. I was gassed and had pneumonia following. I was very ill. I was delirious for two weeks so I could not write to any one. The doctors and nurses all thought I would not get well. I am in England now in American Base Hospital -- No 33 -- Portsmouth, England. I am sitting up today. I have had a terrible time with pleurisy since my pneumonia cleared up. I had to lie just in one position and then I could hardly breathe. I am better now and I will soon be walking about.
I have been in England about a week now. I was in a hospital in France while I was so ill. I expect I will be sent to the USA as soon as I am able to travel as I don't think I will be fit for a long time yet. I have lost a lot of weight. I am only skin and bone. I will gain rapidly now.
Well, there was a great celebration here yesterday when the news of the cessation of hostilities was published. I did not take part. I just lay in bed and was thankful to be alive and glad the war is over. I feel I have done my bit in the war and am satisfied. I suppose there was great celebrating in the USA. Some way I did not feel like celebrating, even if I had be able. I have always looked forward to being in France when peace was declared but I was disappointed. I wanted to be with the men I have served with the past fifteen months when peace was declared. Oh, well I should not complain as I am lucky to be here at all. It's better to be in hospital "cracked up" than lying beneath the daisies of France with a wooden cross for a decoration. It is sort of a sad time for us who have been doing front line work when we think of the good friends we have lost. While the war lasted we did not think of those things but now when the war is over, it comes to one as a shock. My work has mostly been with a battallion in the line and there one makes friends that never can be forgotten and numbers of them have made the supreme sacrifice.
Well, the nurse says I have to go back to bed as I have been up long enough. Address my mail to the hospital here as I will be here a month or two anyway. Give my love to all.
Your loving son,
Will
