re: Mary Elizabeth Nowlin, a feeble minded person
I would appreciate it very much if you will send me a certified copy of the marriage record of Elizabeth Hackett to Galleton Monroe Nowlin as I belive the license was issued in this county.
From the files of Louis Newberry, describing the attempted murder of Hackett.
Elizabeth DeWesse Newberry (mother of Samuel NewBerry) Grandmother of L.M.
Probably born in Ohio, lived in Oklahoma. Had a brother George in Oklahoma. When he was a kid he got drunk. His mother tied him to a bed and whipped hi. "It took it out of him" and he became a preacher. Nothing more is known about her family. She married a Newberry. They had 3 boys, Samuel, Earnest and Alfonzo. They were probably born in Ohio. The family moved from Ohio to Kansas, Elizabeth divorced Newberry and married "old man" Noland, a man who had been staying with them. She lived with him and met ? Hackett.
Hackett was born & raised in Ohio - she probably met him there.
Noland and Samuel Newberry knew there was something going on between Elizabeth & Hackett, and they were going to put a stop to it. They were cleaning a well, and Hackett was in the bottom of it. Samuel & Noland pulled him up and dropped him probably 60 ft, trying to kill him, but they failed - it just bruised him up.
