The Baptist Church. The first society of this denomination was organized by the Reverend Jonathan Smith, mainly through the strenuous efforts of Reverend Richardson. In 1874, in connection with the lodge of Free Masons, they erected a two story building, the lower story being used as a Church, and the upper for lodge purposes.
John C. Richardson was a Baptist minister. He lived in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, during the war between the states. He came to Ripley about 1873, was instrumental in building up the Baptist Church at that place. Before his death in 1889, he moved to a house in the cove, near where Isaac Spears now lives. His wife, Lois Wright Richardson, was born in England, in 1812, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Spears, in October, 1903. Their children were:
