The first society of this denomination was organized by the Reverend Jonathan Smith, mainly through the strenuous efforts of Reverend Richardson. Richardson was a Baptist minister. He lived in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, during the war between the states. He came to Ripley about 1873, was instrumental in building up the Baptist Church at that place. Before his death in 1889, he moved to a house in the cove, near where Isaac Spears now lives.
