      Enlisted or Drafted 1 Aug 1814, Randolph Co, served 3 Sept 1814 to 22 Feb 1815, discharged honorably at Fort Nelson, Norfolk, VA.

      Hardesty's Ripley Dist, Jackson Co.
      Jonathan and Magdalene (Weatherholt) Casto, parents of Benjamin F, settled in Jackson county about 1816. The Bonnetts and Castoes were among the earliest and most eminent families of the pioneer settlers of this county. Jonathan Casto was a soldier of the 1812 war, and his widow, still living in this county at the age of 88 years, is drawing a pension for his services in that war. Isaac J, brother of Benjamin F, was a Confederate soldier, war of 1861, and was wounded at the battle of Lewisberg in1862, and honorably discharged. He was also a participant in the battle at Cross Lane, Virginia.

      Pension and Bounty Land Records
      Enlisted or Drafted 1 Aug 1814 Randolph co, served 3 Sept 1814 to 22 Feb 1815, discharged honorably, at Fort Nelson, Norfolk, VA. He was a private in the Co commanded by Capt Jonathan Walmsly in hte 5th Reg of the VA Militia commissioned by Col Isaac Booth.

      Know all men by these presents that we Jonathan Casto, Benjamin Wright, Nehemiah Smith, Levi Casto, Charles Carney, Hugh Kyger, GW Smith, and Andrew Wilson are held and firmly bound unto the commonwealth of Virginia in the just and full sum of thirty thousand dollars for the payment whereof well and truly to be made to the said commonwealth for the use thereof we bind our selves and each of us our and each of our heirs executors and administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this tenth day of March AD 1845.
      The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound Jonathan Casto is constituted and appointed sheriff of this county of Jackson by a commission from the Governor under the seal fo the commonwealth dated the 18th day of December 1844 last past. If therefor the said Jonathan Casto shall well and truly collect and receive all officers fees and dues put into his hands to collect and duly account for and pay the same to the officers to whom such fees are due respectively at such time as are prescribed and limited by law and shall well and truly execute and due return make of all process and precepts to him directed and pay and satisfy all sums of money and tobacco by him receoved by virtue of any such process to the person or persons to whom the same are due his or this executors administrators or assigns and in all other matters and things shall truly and faithfully execute and perform the said office of Sheriff during the time of his continuance therein. Then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.

      Jonathan Casto was also a son of William Casto, Sr. He married Magdalene Weatherholt and lived near Fairplain. He died before the Civil War but his wife was yet living in 1883. Their children were: Benjamin F, married Matilda Craig; Isaac; Barbara, married Billy Goodwin; Jacob, married Celia, daughter of James Winters, Elizabeth, married Robert Barnett; Abraham, married Rebecca Crites.

      The headstone is weathering, and the natural streaks in the stone makes it more difficult to read. The military marker is very crisp and clear, and there is a metal "In Honor of Service in War of 1812" marker as well.
