  Notes	Mr. John GREENE, pioneer citizen, well-to-do farmer, and prominent church worker, was found dead in his bed Monday morning. Mr. GREENE, who was 84 years of age, had not been well for some days prior to his death but was able to sit in a chair Sunday. About 2 o'clock Monday morning he asked for a drink of water, which was given him. When Mrs. GREENE went to his bed the next morning life was extinct. His death was probably due to heart trouble as there were no indications of a struggle in passing away. Deceased was a resident of this county all his life, except a few years spent in Indiana, where he was first married. He was a son of Edward GREENE, whose father was killed in Old Virginia by a rock under which a fire was built by a party of hunters. Edward GREENE was then eleven years old. He owed his escape to a pile of wood which enabled him to crawl out and give the alarm. Mr. GREENE was a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church since early in youth. He leaves an estate valued at $10,000 to $12,000, which will go to his heirs. He is survived by his wife and five children, Mrs. G. W. TINCHNER, Mrs. A. F. PRINGLE, Mrs. Theodore CASTO, Mrs. D. N. SIMMONS, and S. F. GREENE. The remains were interred beside those of his first wife in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Tuesday, following funeral services conducted by Rev. T. O. POWERS. His father, Charles Green, settled with his family about the beginning of the century, on the Trace Fork of the Poca River. A neighbor, Reuben Harrison about the same time settled on Mud Lick, a branch of Thirteen Mile Creek. He had several sons, among them Josiah and Alexander, and a lad of about twelve years, name Zebulon. In the spring of 1813, when Edward Green was about ten years old, his father allowed him to accompany him on one of his hunting expeditions on the waters of Eighteen, which he and the Harrisons often made together. The elder Green and Alexander Harrison had gone out in the morning, and, having killed, dressed and hanged up a deer, found a tree, which, from the marks made by scratching they supposed to contain a bear. Hastening to the Harrison home seven miles distant, they procured axes for chopping the tree, and accompanied by the boys, hurried back, but found no bear when the tree was felled. As it was now too late to return that night before it became dark, they decided to camp in the woods, as was a common custom. A little search discovered a large sheltering rock, under which they could bestow themselves very comfortably on a bed of leaves the boys prepared while the men built a fire under the outer side of the cave, and prepared supper, after which they lay down to slumber, little dreaming of the terrible fate awaiting them. During the night, the combined effect of the heat and frost caused the rock overhead to burst and fall upon the sleepers below. Both the men were crushed from the hips down, both men died in great agony after two or three days suffering, but the boys, owning to their smaller size, and the mass of rock being partially supported by a rock under the end where they lay, were, though badly bruised, able to extricate themselves, and were found by the neighbors, nearly famished, on the fourth day after the accident. Both recovered and grew to manhood. Two of Charles Green’s daughters, Sally and Betsy, married Jesse and Charles Carney, respectively. Edward Green married Chlora Koontz Pfost, daughter of Henry Koontz.
