Hood was born in 1838. In 1858, he married Rebecca McGrew, daughter of John McGrew of Jefferson County Ohio, and took charge of mill for Jacob Ong in 1859. About 1864 he came into possession of the mill. John McGrew came from Jefferson County, Ohio, to Jackson County in 1847. He purchased the Ripley Mill from Jacob Sayre, in 1853. He later disposed of this mill and moved to Kentucky, where he continued his milling operations until his death, at the age of eighty seven years. His children were: Lemuel McGrew, who lived at Sandyville. John Plummer McGrew. A. W. McGrew. Rebecca McGrew, married Del. K. Hood.
