[1] Notes - Allen Alexander "Uncle Al" SKIDMORE, as he was popularly known, passed peacefully away at the home of his daughter, Mr. G. W. JACKSON, at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning, aged 77 years, 10 months and 7 days. His death was due to organic heart trouble, a family disease which had also claimed four sisters.
Allen Alexander SKIDMORE was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia on March 30, 1836. With his parents moved to this state when a small boy, settling on Parchment. Mr. SKIDMORE learned the shoe makers trade and helped on the farm, his parents dying when he was young. Later he moved to Skidmore postoffice, which was named for him, living there until 1894 when he moved to Ripley and became proprietor of the Star Furniture Company. He joined the United Brethren Church in early life and remained a faithful follower of Christ, was always active in church work. He was a member of the Fairplain IOOF No. 192, served several terms as road surveyor of Washington District and was Deputy Sheriff under Col. HASSLER. His entire life was one of usefulness and honor.
Mr. SKIDMORE was the last surviving member of his family and is survived by two sons and four daughters: J. A. SKIDMORE, Mrs. G. W. JACKSON, Mrs. J. A. SHINN, Mrs. V. L. CASTO, Mrs. W. C. SNYDER of Clarksburg, and C. L. SKIDMORE. His wife died five years ago. Following a brief service at the home Thursday morning conducted by Rev. E. W. WEBSTER, the remains were taken to the old home on Tug Fork for interment, Rev. J. W. MARTIN and Rev. T. H. RYMER and the Fairplain Lodge participating. (Mountaineer, 9 Jan 1914)

This indenture made and entered into on this 27th day of March in the year of Lord 1843 By an Between Charles Carney and Elizabeth his wife of the County of Jackson and State of Virginia of the first part and Sarah Skidmore (widow of Archibald Skidmore Decd) Eleanore Ann Skidmore, Martha Ann Skidmore, Sarah Angeline Skidmore, Elizabeth Lewis Skidmore, Alexander Allen Skidmore, Levina Elizabeth Skidmore, and Archibald Stone Skidmore of the second part: Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred dollars to us in hand paid by the said Archibald Skidmore in his lifetime or secured to be paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have Granted, Bargained and Sold and By these presents to ther grantees do convey unto the aforesaid Sarah Skidmore, Elinore Ann, Martha Ann, Sarah Angelina, Elizabeth Lewis, Alexander Allen, Levina Elizabeth and Archibald Stone, Skidmore one consolidated tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Jackson and State of Virginia containing one hundred and twenty nine acres by Survey made by John D. D. Roper, on the west side of Mill Creek adjoining the lands formerly of Thomas Carney and Bounded as follows to wit; Beginning at a white oak corner of Andrews Survey on the side of the School House hill, thence N 40o E. 80 poles to a Beech crossing the Charleston Road, thence S 62o
E. 32 poles with the meanders of Mill Creek to a Sugar tree, thence S. 38o E. 38 poles with said Creek to a sugar tree, thence S. 411/2o E. 66 poles to a Beech near road leading to Rollins Mill: S. 60 poles to a white oak, S. 60 W. 80 poles crossing a Run to a white oak on the side of a hill thence N 50o W. 26 poles to a Black oak, thence N. 52o W. 104 poles to the Beginning with all and singular the appliances thereunto belonging or on any wise appertaining to her the Said Sarah Skidmore, Elinor Ann, Martha Ann, Sarah Angeline Elizabeth Lewis, Alexander Allen, Levina Elizabeth, and Archibald Stone Skidmore, heirs of the aforesaid Archibald S. Skidmore Decd, to them and their heirs and assigns forever, free of the claims of us the said Charles Carney & Elizabeth Carney and And all person or persons claiming by through or under us, and all other person or persons whatsoever, by special warranty that is to say if the land Should be lost by any older or superior title, we the said Charles Carney & Elizabeth Carney oblige ourselves our heirs to pay back the purchase money with Interest or cash -

Pioneers of Jackson Co: John House
Archibald Skidmore married Sarah Anderson in Botetourt County, VA. They emigrated to Mill Creek about 1831 or 1832, locating on the farm since know as the Skidmore farm, on which Squire George Casto had lived.
He has 'Bet' married to Henry Rollins.
In 1850, Elizabeth was 13 - is she 'Bet'???
