- Mr. Charles L. Courtney, Sr.
1927-2017
Mr. Charles (Charlie) Lee Courtney, Sr., "Dozer Man", 89 of Hometown, WV went home to be with the Lord January 14, 2017 at home with his family.
He was born February 9, 1927 in Looneyville, West Virginia, Roane County, to the late Friend Thomas Courtney and Dixie Mae Miller Courtney Cottrell. Charlie is also preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Jerry Lou Anderson Courtney; brothers Herman Courtney, George Courtney and Friend Thomas, Jr.; sisters Audrey Courtney Cassell, Eleanor Courtney Cantrell and Francis Courtney Nielsen.
After retiring from the United Mine Workers Union and the Operators Engineers Union, Charlie worked for Clyde Raynes and Sons, which after years of being a dozer operator many knew him by "Dozer Man". Charlie and his wife enjoyed traveling and camping, spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends. He attended Wilkinson United Methodist Church in Hometown, West Virginia.
The family extends a special thank you to Katy Moffet, dad's niece, for the additional care given at home, Hospice Care nurses and staff and the staff of 5th floor pavilion at Thomas Memorial Hospital this past week for his care. A special thanks to the staff of Tudors and Ginos in Nitro for always making Charlie feel at home.
Charlie is survived by his children Carolyn Louann Casto and husband Kenneth of Mt. Sidney, VA, Cathy Lynn Finney of Hometown and Charles Lee "Chuck" Courtney, Jr. and wife Lisa of Hometown; grandchildren Tanya Jo Courtney Luikart and husband Dale of Red House, Kendra Lynn Casto Miller and husband Travis of King George, Virginia, Sarah Smith and boyfriend Rob Gibson of Poca, Stefanie Courtney McGuirl and husband Mark of Mesa, Arizona and Zach Smith of Bancroft; step-grandchildren Ross Thornton and wife Ashley of Milton and Levi Thornton and girlfriend Laura of Medford, Oregon; great grandchildren Kaitlyn, Courtney and Kasen Luikart, Gavin and Lucas Miller, Blakely McGuirl, Bella, Halee and Abigail Thornton and Whitney Bush; sister Effie Courtney Cooper of Parkersburg; brother Ervin Courtney of Charleston; brother-in-laws Bill Hively and wife Phyllis of Red House and Tom Anderson of Ohio; sister-in-law Carole Courtney of FL, and several nieces and nephews and beloved pet Rambo.
A tribute to the life of Charlie will be 1:00 PM Wednesday January 18, 2017 at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ross Thornton and Dale Luikart officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Epling Chapel Church in Looneyville. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
