    • Charles served in the Army during WWI and was killed in action in France on July 18, 1918. His name is inscribed on the World War I Memorial located on the grounds of the West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston.

    • Minnie died died in 1920, two years after the death of Charles. Their children, Elsie Mable, William H. and Charles Jr., were first placed in the guardianship of John Sheets, but later placed in guardianship of O.B. Atkinson.

      Their son William Henderson Shaffer eventually ended up living with his Aunt, Maria Evelyne Sheets and her husband Wilson Jones.

      The following article appeared in The Charleston Daily Mail newspaper on Sept 13, 1920, shortly after the death of Minnie.

      Charles Shaffer, minors and appointed
      in his place O. B. Atkinson. The
