      Kenneth R. Reffeitt:
John Thomas Greer, Sr., b. 1803 – d. 1900, was the father of Hugh Jasper Greer. He was an early Justice of the Peace (called “Squire” then) of Mason County and was commissioned Major in the 141st Regiment, Thirteenth Brigade and Fifth Division of the Virginia Militia on April 24, 1834. He had served as a drummer boy in the War of 1812. I have one of his drum sticks given to me by my great aunt by marriage (and cousin by blood) Iva Daugherty Greer (Mrs. Wm. Wirt Greer). The Greers of Jackson County were all Democrats and those of Mason County were always Republican. So maybe this is why they were rather “distant” and didn’t do too much socializing.
John Thomas, Jr., Hugh Jasper, and Oscar Newton served in the Union Army.
