      Dottie Virginia Parsons Pickens departed this life Friday, May 18, 2007, at the age of 79, her life's desire being fulfilled: “If I can help somebody my life will have not been in vain.” Truly, her life was one of helping others. Whether family, friends, neighbors or strangers, she was always available. Virginia was born Jan. 27, 1928, at Gay to Lon and Laura Sheets Parsons. She retired in 1991 from Kellwood Manufacturing after 28 years of service. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church.
      She is survived by five children and their spouses, David and Mona Pickens of Evans, Jean and Bob Byers of Marietta, Ohio, Debbie and Bruce Johnson of Parkville, Mo., John and Beth Pickens of Angier, N.C., and Jim Pickens of Gonzales, N.M.; one brother, Marceline Parsons of Charleston; and two sisters, Mary Kessel of Carleton, Mich., and Lottie Whited of Stuart, Fla. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Noil Pickens; one daughter-in-law, Tammy Pickens; brothers, Paul Parsons, Lothel Parsons and Alonzo Parsons Jr.; and sisters, Doshia Blackwell, Ruth Blackwell, Myrtle Lee Ables, Jesse Owens, Corrine DeLuz, Lurlene Evans, Lucille Southall and Lillian Staats.
      A celebration of her life will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 21, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Ripley, with the Rev. Charles Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Roane County. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church and one hour prior to service, also at the church. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church Building Fund, 205 Court St., Ripley, WV 25271.
      Arrangements are in the care of Vail Funeral Home, Ripley.
