James William Casto, 76, of Evans, WV, departed this life, March 26, 2002, in Jackson General Hospital, Ripley, following an extended illness.
He was born June 18, 1925 in Cottageville, a son of the late Archie Alonzo and Laura Leona (Donohew) Casto.
He was raised on a farm in Cottageville, WV, and attended Union High School, prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army. He was a partially disabled veteran, and served in Europe and Africa during WWII. Following his military service, he received his diploma from Ripley High School. He graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming in 1949, and four years later returned home to Jackson County, and founded the Casto Funeral Home in Evans in April of 1953.
He was also the former owner and operator of Casto’s Store, Casto Garage, Casto Monument Company and Casto Farms. He was a member of the VFW post #3488, Sandyville, WV, Cottageville Lodge #54 AF & AM, Jackson Chapter #48, Royal Arch Masons, Ravenswood, Dowell Commandery #28, Knights Templar, Ravenswood, Nemesis Temple of the Shrine, Parkersburg, Lodge #30, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Ripley. He was a member of the first board of the Evans Public Service District. He was a Christian.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lila R. (Baker) Casto; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley C. and James B. Hutton of Evans; son and daughter-in-law, James W., Jr. and Karen L. Casto, of Evans; grandchildren, Steven J. and his wife Jennifer Hutton of Evans, Scott W. Hutton of Ripley, J.W. Casto, III, Megan Casto, and Morgan Casto all of Evans.
In addition to his parents, his brothers, Alvin Eugene Casto, and Harrison L. Casto, preceded him in death.
Service was Friday, March 29, 2002—1 p.m. at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, WV, with the Rev. Gerald B. Sayre and the Rev. Ann E. Skeen officiating. Burial will follow in the Blaine Memorial Cemetery, Cottageville, WV. Visitation was from 3 - 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
