This quilt has passed through family via sons - typically @ their marriage. maker------>oldest son------>youngest son(1st married)---->son (Enter's note: names have been excluded) page 1 education: probably could not read or write maker's ancestry: German speaking Swill Switzerland via Philadelphia to Berks Co PA then to Hardy Co WV to Buckhannon WV Spouse"s birth place: then Lewis Co now Upshur Co, From a letter from owner: This quilt was made 1859 or earlier by Jemima Kessel Reger who was born March 27, 1815 and died Sept 22, 1902. The exact place of her birth is not known, but we assume it was in or near Buckhannon. She and her husband John Jackson Reger, born June 4, 1820 on Brushy Fork and died Aug. 8, 1896. Married Sept. 12, 1833. They lived their entire married life on the Brushy Fork Road in what is now Upshur County, just outside of Buckhannon. Their home was just beyond the present Reger Chapel Church for which they gave the land and where they are both buried. They raised a family of 5 children. Their eldest son Montreville Reger, born July 5, 1834, died April 20, 1887, married Sarah Elizabeth Carper, born Sept 28, 1834, died April 8, 1926, in 1859. This quilt was presented to them at that time, by Jemima and John J. It was given with a complete set of bedding for one bed; including feather tick, pillows etc. Sarah Carper Reger bequeathed the quilt to her youngest son who was the first married of her sons. That son was Elvie Robert Reger, bon April 7, 1876, died March 11, 1972. He married Mollie Flint Lewis, b. Jan 20, 1880, died Dec. 25, 1973, on April 11, 1903. The present owners are their son and daughter-in-law. Ancestry of John Jackson Reger: Son of Philip Reger and his second wife Mary Jane Fornash. He was the first sheriff of Lewis County (which included this area in 1816) He was a Revolutionary War Veteran and is buried in the Reger Cemetery at Red Rock. They moved to Brushy Fork in 1795 after the danger from the Indians subsided. Grandson of Jacob and Barbara Cretes Reger who settled in Volga c. 1782. Great grandson of Antony and Barbara Waertz Reger who were immigrants from Switzerland in 1737 and who received 2 landgrants from Lord Fairfax in 1748 on the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac
