  Notes	Dave Casto and Jim Casto have his middle name as Jacob. John Casto, Sr. (son of David Casto Sr. & Phebe Gandy) was married to Sarah. In PA, John Casto, 7th Class, served in the Washington County Militia 3rd Co., 1st Battalion under Capt. William Crawford on May 17, 1782 at Jackson's Fort. He is also believed to be the same Jonathan Casto with the same company on Oct. 15, 1781. After the war, John left Greene Township and followed his brother David Casto to Buckhannon Settlement. In 1785, John was taxed at Buckhannon Settlement with a family of five. That family included David J. Casto, possibly Rachel Casto (who married a Radcliffe in Harrison Co.) and William Casto (third child). John Sr. took his family south up Monongahela River, by Tygart Valley and Buckhannon Rivers to the mouth of Turkey Run. John had a survey run on 137 acres. However it was 1800 before it was granted on Randolph Co. records; and by 1810 it was located in Harrison Co VA, (later Upshur Co, WV). John is listed on the 1810 US Census for Harrison Co, VA as follows: 1 male age 45 plus; 3 males ages 16 to 26; 1 male age 10 to 16 and 1 female age 26 to 45 Following the death of John's brother David Casto, Jr., John sold 127 acres to his own son David J. Casto. The deed was recorded during Harrison Co. August 1812 Court. John Casto, Sr. paid personal property tax in 1813 in Jackson County, and a George Casto paid personal property tax in Jackson Co. in 1816. John Casto, Sr., female above forty-five (probably Sarah), and an adult son were listed in Mason Co. in 1820.

  Notes	David Casto traveled to Fairfield Township, Cumberland Co., South Jersey to accompany Phebe Gandy to a Baptist Church at Cape May Courthouse, NJ to be married. They were declared married on 17 August 1752 by Nathaniel Jenkins. They returned to Turkey Point and established a home at Downe Township north of Egg Island. A baptismal record for David and Phebe was found dated 1765 at the Dividing Creek Baptist Church, Downe Township, NJ. By this time, they had at least five children. They traveled north to Salem, New Jersey, then took the Great Wagon Road at York , PA. They crossed the Potomac River into Hampshire Co. It is believed they had another daughter while at Hampshire (Berkeley) County. They traveled on to establish a claim at the mouth of Buffalo Creek on the Monongahela River. They both died about 1770 in Berkley County, WV. ******* I believe this is what has been called the Billy Burris story. Pompey Leggit was the father of Thomas, about whom the story is written. Philippi is in what is now Braxton County, but it was 1738 before Augusta and Frederick counties were formed in what is now WV. Counties were formed as the population of an area grew large enough to need it's own government. Braxton was formed from parts of Kanawha, Lewis and Nicholas counties in 1836. In "A While Ago Times", Volume 2, Page 12 At the end of a story titled "Thomas Leggit Story" . . . Dr Leggett's great-great-great grandfather, Pompey Leggit, a man named William Burris, and others, whom Dr. Leggett named, did indeed establish a permanent settlement near present Philippi, West Virginia, in 1704; that William Burris, son of William and Mary Morgan Burris, born in Delaware in 1670, died in 1759 near the site of this settlement; and that his son, Enoch, and two stepsons, last name Casto, continued to live in that area until they died.

Came to Mason county about 1813 from the Harrison county area. He was then married and had a son, John J Casto, who was also married and had two sons and two daughters who were under 10 years of age in 1820. John J married Gracey, a daughter of James McDade. John Casto Sr was deceased before 1831. John A House: 'Pioneers of Jackson County': pg 135 John Casto and William Casto are said to be brothers of each other, and perhaps cousins of George Casto. John lived "on Mill Creek not far above Ripley", just where does not appear. He was married and his children grown when he came to Jackson County. His children were William, John J and Daniel. From Raymond Casto Family Bible, copied Aug 29, 1972 written in front of the Bible by a relative who had visited: Big John Casto's wife, Sara McDade. Her father, Jesse McDade was killed by Indians. He killed 7 Indians with a hand spike before they killed him. The fight took place at the big bend in the Ohio River about 1690. [Was Sarah a McDade? Was her father killed about 1790, not 1690?]
