He was born March 19, 1947, in Ripley, son of Joseph R. Payne and the late Ivy Litton Payne. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Malinda Lee Payne. He was a mechanic with the West Virginia Department of Highways, a Christian, a member of Grace Gospel Baptist Church where he worked in the Bus Ministry and was an Army veteran. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Wilma White Payne of Gay; daughters, Bridget Patterson and Brittany Payne, both of Gay; sister, Rebecca Canter of Louisiana; grandchildren, Ethan Cole Patterson and Cameron Reese Patterson; and several nieces and nephews. Service will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 1, at Parsons-Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Pastor Shannon Skeen officiating. Burial will be in Jackson County Memory Gardens, Cottageville, with military rites by Jackson County veterans organizations. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
