Gerald M. Cummings
Gerald Mason Cummings, 90, of Summersville died Thursday, June 22, 2006 at Summersville Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He was born at Mattie, a son of the late Benjamin Harrison and Della Jones Cummings. He was a graduate of the former Walton High School, Glenville State College and West Virginia University. He began his teaching career in Roane County in 1934 and transferred to Nicholas County in 1946. He was a teaching principal and later a general supervisor and was superintendent of Nicholas County Schools from 1962 to 1972. He taught all grades from first through graduate school including at W.Va. College of Graduate Studies and Glenville State College.
He served in World War II in the 82nd Airborne Division attaining the rank of Master Sergeant and was the recipient of the Bronze Star.
He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Summersville, served as a Sunday school teacher, lay speaker and was very active in the W.Va. United Methodist annual conference.
He is survived by his wife, Verdie Bragg Cummings; one brother, Lakin Cummings of Spencer; and two sisters, Elsie Cummings and Garnet Raines, both of Spencer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother; his first wife, Mary Groves Cummings; and one son, Danny.
Service was Saturday at Memorial United Methodist Church, Summersville with Rev. Damon Rhodes officiating. Burial was in Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwood.
White Funeral Home, Summersville, was in charge of arrangements.
