      Frederick Dana Wolfe, 89, of Ripley passed away Nov. 22, 2005, following a three-month illness.

      Born Oct. 17, 1916, he was the son of the late Frederick D. and Cleopatra Rollins Wolfe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dona Shackleford, who lived near Abilene, Texas.

      Dana grew up in Ripley and graduated from Ripley High School and Morris Harvey College. After graduation, he worked as a linotype operator for his father's Mountaineer Newspaper and played saxophone in a Big Band around the Ripley area and surrounding states. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and was stationed in Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe and Africa. He served in the Army and Army Reserves for 24 years and was promoted to lieutenant colonel, a battlefield commission, during World War II. He received the Bronze Star while on duty in Germany, three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and the Good Conduct Medal from Belgium. He received the American Freedom Medal from Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito.

      After his military career, Dana worked different jobs until her retired. He was a district manager for Broughton Dairy, Huntington. He was co-owner of Spartan School Supplies, Charleston. He was district supervisor for the West Virginia State Road Commission, working out of the Parkersburg location. After he retired, he worked as a counselor for a local group home. He was active and visited in town every day up until he became ill.

      Dana was a past member of the Charleston Lions Club, Huntington Lions Club, Huntington Chamber of Commerce, Charleston Chamber of Commerce, the American Legion, VFW, the West Virginia Manufacturers Association, West Virginia Retailers Association, Mountaineer Education Media Association, the West Virginia Education Association and the National Audio-Visual Association.

      Dana is survived by his wife of 40 years, Susan Markle Wolfe; son and his wife, Michael and Donna Wolfe; grandsons, Christ and Nick of Webster, N.Y.; daughter, Debi and Steven Peskor; grandchildren, Eric and Kurk of Ontario, N.Y.; and stepson, Martin Dean of Ripley.

      Memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, at Vail Funeral Home, Ripley. The body will be cremated.

      Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
