      The four sons of Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Casto, of Rockcastle, are in uniform. Cpl. Milford Casto, an aviator radar operator with the Marines, is the husband of the former Marie Kessel, who with a small daughter, is with her parents near Ripley, He is stationed in North Carolina. S/Sgt. Dale C Casto has been in the service more than three years and is in England. Cpl. Arthur Casto is with the Army Air Corps in Texas, and Cpl. Bernard Casto, also with the Army Air Corps, is in Florida. All are graduates of the Ripley High School, except Bernard who was graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston.       The seriousness of the war struck home to Jackson county this week and in at least three homes there was sorrow for members of the family at the fighting front were either lost or wounded and in another case a young man was seriously injured at a training camp, according to reports, and his mother was speeding south to be at his bedside during his critical hour.
      At about the same time Mr. and Mrs. O.H. Casto, of Rockcastle, who have four sons in the service, received a message that their youngest son, Bernard, in a training camp in Florida had been seriously injured in the crash of a "jeep”. His condition was serious, the parents were told and his body had been crushed and at the time the message was sent a high tempature had developed and a crisis was expected in his case soon. Mrs. Casto left immediately upon receipt of the message to be with the young son.

      Bernard Lee Casto

      Bernard Lee Casto, 83, of Evans departed this life Oct. 8, 2007, in Jackson General Hospital, Ripley, following a brief illness.

      Born Aug. 27, 1924, in Rockcastle, he was a son of the late Okey Harrison and Elva Marie Batrell Casto. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Lee Casto; brothers, Milford and Dale Casto; and sisters, Mildred Parsons and Marie Casto.

      He was a member of Boilermakers Union Local 667, Winfield, and the Jackson County Coon Hunters Association. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, a member of Disabled American Veterans and a Protestant.

      Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Virginia Skidmore Casto; son and daughter-in-law, John Bernard and Mirlie Casto of Leon; brother, Arthur Casto of Greenville, S.C.; sister, Ardella Casto of Cross Lanes; grandchildren, Jonathan and his wife, Cassie Casto of Given, Bernard and his wife, Katie Casto of Evans and Carrie Casto and fiancé, Ron Livingston of Evans; and great-granddaughter, Corbin Elizabeth Casto.

      Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, with John Gunther officiating. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with military honors provided by VFW Post 2418, St. Albans.

      Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
