CASTO Ernest D. CASTO, 72 years old, and a former resident of Given, died in a Charleston hospital Sunday evening of a skull fracture suffered when he was struck by a truck at a street crossing in Charleston Saturday afternoon. A manslaughter charge was placed against David FOWLER, of that city, who was the driver of the truck. Funeral services were held at Dunbar Tuesday afternoon with Doctor Ray N. SHAFFER, assisted by Rev. K. J. SCOTT, officiating and burial was in the Grandview cemetery Dunbar WV The deceased man formerly lived at Given but a few years ago moved to Ohio and later came back to Charleston where he has since made his home. Surviving are five sons, Howard of Dunbar, E. G. of Pittsburgh, Pa., C. Everett of Canton, Ohio, C. Lowhan of Massillon, Ohio, and W. Luther of South Charleston; seven daughters, Mrs. E. O. SIGMON of Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Dale NORRIS of Massillon, Ohio, Mrs. J. A. FERRELL and Mrs. Manona BOWLES of Charleston, Mrs. Forrest GIVEN and Mrs. Donald WILLIAMSON of Dunbar, and Mrs. W. O. RAINES of Canton, Ohio; his father, G. Riley CASTO of Parkersburg; five sisters, Mrs. Docia SCOTT, Mrs. Mae PARSONS and Miss Blanche CASTO, all of Parkersburg, Mrs. Allena STAATS of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Mrs. Tennie STARCHER of Ripley; two brothers, Edward A. CASTO of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Harry CASTO of Washington, Pa.; 28 grandchildren and two g-grandchildren. [Ernest D. CASTO, age 21, and M. E. WAUGH, age 20, were married 28 March 1887. He also taught singing lessons from "shaped" notes. Oh, how we loved to sing! Our family operated the Telephone Exchange in our home. As most families did in those days, they raised and canned most of the food they ate, and the men killed hogs, and took wheat and corn to the mill to be ground for their flour and meal. I can remember Father making sorghum and how the "horsepower" would be used to grind the cane to extract the juice to be boiled down for syrup. Mother said, "If you don't thank the Lord for your food it won't set well in your stomach." Grace was said before every meal. Emily Dickinson said, "Hold your parents dearly because without them the world is a very lonely place." In 1915 Father moved us to the Charleston area to further our education and to find industrial employment. He eventually bought property in Dunbar and we became quite active in community affairs. At present I am the only child who still resides in Dunbar. I play the organ at First Church United Methodist. I was instrumental in establishing an Endowment Fund at our church in memory of loved ones who have passed away.
