James Corbin Kessel - Charleston Daily Mail - (Oct/31/2005)
James Corbin Kessel, 88, of Ripley died October 28, 2005, at Jackson General Hospital following a long illness. He was born June 13, 1917, in Parchment Valley, Jackson County, son of the late Delmer E. and Elizabeth Corbin Kessel. He was retired as a teacher and principal of Jackson Count School System with 37 years of service.
He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and the Golden Rule Sunday school class. He was a treasurer of the Francis Asbury Educational Loan Fund of the West Virginia United Methodist Conference for 30 years.
He was a member of the Ripley Rotary Club since 1964, where he served as club president (1965-66) and club secretary for 14 years, District Governor's area representative, a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, and contributor of the worldwide Polio-Plus Campaign.
He was a World War II Coast Guard veteran, 50-year member of Ripley American Legion Post No. 107, received the Post Meritorious Award in 1978, and Post Patriotism Award in 1980.
He served as City of Ripley town recorder for two years.
He was a 60-year member and past master of the Ripley Lodge No. 16 AF & AM. He was past worthy patron of Ripley chapter no. 17, Order of Eastern Star, and a member of Knights Templar and Scottish Rite Masons.
He was a graduate of Marshall and West Virginia Universities.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Anita Carol Kessel; and eight brothers and sisters.
He is survived by 15 nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
The funeral service is to be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2005, at the Epworth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ken Krimmel officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery with Masonic Rites provided by Ripley Lodge No. 16 AF & AM.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 31, 2005, at the Vail Funeral Home of Ripley and one hour prior to the funeral service a the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Epworth United Methodist Church Memorial or Building Fund, Corner of Church & North Street, Ripley, WV.
