A United States Marine Corps World War II veteran, Mr. Nichols was a member of the Third Marine Division. He served on Iwo Jima and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Elks, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 17, and the New Smyrna Beach Christian Church. Mr. Nichols, a sports fan, enjoyed watching sports and riding his electric scooter. Surviving: daughters, Hedy and her husband, Stacy Eckert, of Lake Helen, Fla., Marty and her husband, Joe Riley, of Lake City, Fla., Nickie and her husband, John Plumb, of Rosemont, Pa., Mary Pat and her husband, Chuck Dean, of Astor, Fla., and Sharon and her husband, Buck Davis, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; son, Harold Nichols Jr. and his wife, Dee, of West Warwick, R.I.; brothers, William of Kissimmee, Fla., Donald of Charleston, and Bob of Montgomery; sisters, Helen Edick of Charleston, Patsy Barnett of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Janice Kay Pritt of Akron, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Beryl Nichols of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and an aunt, Vivadeen Stout of Virginia. Funeral service was July 31 at the Settle Wilder Funeral Home in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Burial followed at the Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery, Edgewater, Fla. United States Army Reserve Chaplain (Colonel) Larry Allen McCarty officiated. There was a miltary honors service at the grave site.
