| 1805 | Lila Roberta “Bo” Casto, 88, of Evans, WV, passed away peacefully, January 9, 2015, in the Ravenswood Care Center, Ravenswood, following an extended illness. She was born September 5, 1926, in Angerona, a daughter of the late James Russell and Clara Pearl (Sayre) Baker. Her husband, James W. Casto and her siblings, Hal Baker, Chester Baker, Olney Wayne Baker, Iris Louine Baker, Avis Ione Raines, and Anna Elizabeth Skeen also preceded her in death She was a member of the last graduating class of Union High School, Cottageville, and later graduated from the Martz Beauty College in Huntington. In 1953, she and her late husband, James, returned home to Jackson County and founded the Casto Funeral Home in Evans. Throughout the 1950’s, 60’s, and early 70’s, in addition to the funeral home, they engaged in many business endeavors, including, Casto Store and Service Station, Casto Monument Company, and Casto Farms. Lila was a member and past matron of Cottageville Chapter #16, Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Sandyville Post #3488 VFW, Ladies Auxiliary, and a longstanding member of Jackson General Hospital Auxiliary. She most recently attended the Parchment Valley Baptist Church, Ripley. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Jim Hutton of Evans; son and daughter-in-law, James Casto, Jr. and Karen of Cottageville; grandchildren, Scott Hutton (Kim), Steven Hutton (Jennifer), and Megan Casto all of Evans, Morgan Casto of Cottageville, and J.W. Casto, III (Karmyn) of Ravenswood; great grandchildren, Cole Hutton, Abigail Hutton, William Casto, and Sophia Casto. Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Evans, WV, with the Rev. Gerald B. Sayre officiating. Burial will follow in the Blaine Memorial Cemetery, Cottageville. | 1806 | Lived at Fairplain, WVa; Staats Mill, WVa; Bidwell, OH Farmer, loved his horses John Robie lived the life of a gypsy during his youth, as his family moved back and forth from WV to PA, and maybe even into Ohio, never staying more than a couple of years, then moving on. John was probably the third of the nine children of Isaac and Cathleen (Rector) Robey. Minnie Belle was the fifth of 11 children born to Ferdinand Silas and Loretta Victoria Casto Reynolds. Theirs was a solid old house, but they left it to move across the river to Ohio about 1919. I remember stories about Grandpa riding his horse to visit Grandma. It was so far he had to stay all night. They married in 1904 and in 1908 had a son, Everett, and in 1914 a daughter, Loretta. John was a big man with the biggest ears God ever put on a man. He must have had dark hair but I remember it as white - and very shiny on top. He was a farmer and loved his horses. John and Minnie lived on 2 or 3 farms in WVa and in Oct 1939 moved to near Bidwell, OH to the farm Minnie's parents had owned and left to their children. The farm was about a mile from the little village of Bidwell, which boasted a grocery store, a hardware store, a mill, two churches, and a railroad depot. Everett, his wife Erma (Casto) whom he had married in 1930 and their four children had moved to the farm across the road in January 1938, but Loretta was still living at home. The farm house was a big white one with a wide porch, but everyone used the kitchen door. I remember the brick path and the cool water we'd draw up out of the well. The yard was shaded by big trees and Grandma always had flowers. The barn wasn't far away and always smelled of warm hay and old leather harnesses. The kitchen was large and heated by the wood burning cook stove. Lace curtains, crocheted doilies, a funny smell - was it Grandma's medicine? She died when I was 10, and I didn't know her very well; my parents had separated when I was three and Mom took us to visit infrequently. Between 1939 and 1945, Everett and Erma had three more children, and Loretta married Sammy Jobe and started her family of three. Grandma was a religious woman, she'd attended the United Brethren Church, but Grandpa was getting on in years before he was baptized in the Ohio River at Middleport, Ohio. He respected her faith, for he gave her a Bible in 1908. She must have had a mind of her own, she changed the spelling of the name Robey to Robie because she just didn't like the way it was spelled, according to one story, but another story says she had a feud going with John's brother and changed the spelling to be different. According to Loretta, they were proud of their grandchildren, at least the first few. The first two were girls and they were OK, but when the first boy came along, he was IT! After that it was downhill until the last one was almost disliked! After Minnie died, Loretta talked John into selling the farm. He lived in little houses - first near Everett, then near Loretta, who was divorced by that time. Finally he was put into a rest home where he died. He outlived Minnie by 10 years. They were married 51 years. ~~ According to Loretta: John Robie had Blue eyes, black hair and was 6'1" Minnie had greenish blue eyes, brown hair and was 5'6". He was the only one who couldn't play music, all his brothers and sisters and father could, but his mother couldn't. John sang bass, Minnie sang soprano, had sung alto earlier in life. They sang a lot. John was a great dancer. John was democrat, Minnie Republican and wouldn't vote because of it. They didn't argue. John had hardly any education, could read & write. Minnie went to 6th or 8th grade - got good grades. Everett says Minnie had black eyes. She was united in marriage to Abraham LITTON, July 3, 1864, and to this union 13 children were born, of whom 9 survive her: William and B. F. LITTON, of Gay, Mrs. Everette PHILLIPS of Reedy, Roane County, Mrs. B. F. COX of Hereford, Mrs. James E. EVANS of Thirteen, Mrs. P. C. GREENLEAF, Irving, Clinton and Levi LITTON, of Charleston. Aunt Louisa was converted early in life and joined the M. P. Church. Some time after the death of her husband she united with the U. B.Church at Gay. Her highest aspirations were to walk in the paths of truth and right as were evidenced by her many friends who had learned of her Christian influence and good deeds. After funeral services conducted by Rev. PAYNE of Spencer, the body was quietly laid to rest beside her husband in the family cemetery. | 1814 | Marietta Ohio Leader Newspaper: Kesiah Kidd (Nee Roberts) was born in Loundon County, Virginia May 30, 1796 and Passed away May 12, 1889 in Jackson County, Virginia, was buried at Stanleyville Cemetery Ohio where quite a number of her relatives are buried. She came to this county in 1808 and remained the greater part of her life. She was married to Amos Kidd in 1813 by Squire White, Justice of the Peace in Fearing Township, Ohio. She was the mother of 10 children. She had at the time of her death 33 grandchildren and 71 Great grandchildren. She was a member of the Baptist Church about 50 yeaars-Living a faithful christian life. Jane Kidd's DC names Parents as Amos Kidd and Kizziah Six. Statement made by Jane before her death in 1917 says her mother's maiden name Kizziah Roberts who married a Mr. Six who died. There are Roberts and Six men serving in Nathaniel Kidd's Company and living in Greene Twsh.Washington County, during the Revolutionary War. Her father was Amos son of Nathaniel, but marriage records from Washington, County, Ohio in 1817 shows Kizziah Roberts marrying Isaac Kidd Amos's brother. It appears the clerk made a mistake, as in the 1850 Census for LibertyTwsh, Washington County, Ohio page 579, line 23 Jane is living in the household of Amos and Keziah. Isaac has a wife Mary, no Jane in HH, ( household) living in Feaaring Twsh, page 623/3 Ln 9. The 1880 Census published for Jackson Co, W Virginia, MARCH, 1989 page 122 shows Household of Amos and Keziah. | 1827 | Obituary Feb 19, 1945 (penciled in) Claud Crayton Reynolds, son of Silas and Loretta Reynolds, was born April 19, 1891, at Fairplain, where he spent his youth, before going to Ohio. He enlisted in the service of his country in World War I and was one of the heroes of the Argonne Forrest. Having experienced first-line warfare, he suffered privations and hardships and narrowly escaped death; but on May 19, 1919, he was honorably discharged and returned to his homeland to live happily until tragedy brought his life to a close. On December 31, 1923, he was united in marriage with Miss Nola Quickle and to this union was born one daughter Delcie - now Mrs. Margaret McClaskey, whose husband is serving overseas in World War II. Besides the bereaved family, he leaves six sisters and one brother; Allie Fisher of Ravenswood; Tennie Winters of Charleston, Dorcas Adams, Minnie Robie, Ernie Strawsbaugh and Jim Reynolds of Bidwell, Ohio and Mae Sharpe of Columbus, Ohio. As a citizen of the community in which he has spent upon returning from war, he was known as an upright, honorable, good man, and many acts of kindness will be remembered by all who knew him. He was devoted to his home and family and they were always first in his thoughts. By those who were assisting in rescuing him from the wreck, he was heard to say, "But I have a family", meaning he wished to be taken home to them. Realizing clearly that death was near, he was heard while praying to say "I am going to meet my Savior." He was a man of deeds, not words, he was one of whom Christ said"By their works shall ye be known." "For not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father, who is in Heaven." In kindness toward others, in thoughts of others, and in service for others, he has fulfilled the admonitions of the Christian Life and is now with the blessed of the Lord, where there is no more sorrow -- the Home Eternal prepared for those who serve the Lord. She is survived by her husband, Larry Watkins; sons Randall Price of Statts Mill and Shaun Price of Ripley; daughters Becky Fields and Pam Baldwin, both of Gay; brothers David, Romeo, Donald and Wendell Fisher; and sisters Ruth Bowman and Mae Winters. She is also survived by her grandchildren Michael and Justin Fields, Tia Baldwin, and Patrick and Abigail Price. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Dorothy. She was born in Palmer, Mass., Nov. 4th, 1805 of Puritan parentage. Her mother's maiden name was Cargill, a lineal descendent of Rev. Donald Cargill, who was executed in 1684, at the cross of Edinburg, because of his religious principles. She migrated with her parents in 1816 from Mass., crossing the Allegheny mountains in wagons, and settled in Chester, Meigs, county, Ohio. She was thrice married--first to Lyman Stedman in 1823, who died in 1828, leaving her with three children--to David DeFord, in 1832 who died in 1836, leaving one child--to Isaac B. Sherman, in 1839, who died in 1852. Four children resulted from this last union. She is survived by three of her children:- Lyman Stedman, of Brown's Island, West.Va., Amanda Sherman Widmer, of Lipscomb, Texas and Geo. W. Sherman, of Sherman, Washington and numerous grandchildren down to the fourth generation. | 1845 | The Greenville News (SC) September 25, 2003 Larry Steven Robey Greenville - Larry Steven Robey, 59, of 32 Frontus St., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Evans, W.Va., he was the son of Regena Stewart Robey Hardman and the late William Howard Robey. Mr. Robey worked for Ballenger Paving Division of APAC Southeast Inc. for 30 years, beginning as an engineer and advancing to chief estimator within a short time. Mr. Robey was instrumental in the success of securing many major heavy highway and airport construction projects throughout the southeast which include: I-675 Atlanta, Ga. Clayton CO., Ga. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport "9R-27L" reconstruction, Atlanta, Ga. County Road 40 - Lamar, Johnson CO., Ariz. Highway 64 West - Co. Rd. 40, Johnson CO., Ariz. I-540 Northern Wade Expressway, Wake Co., N.C. Gulfport-Biloxi Regional Airport Runway 14-32 rehabilitation and reconstruction, Biloxi, Miss. and I-40 Western Loop, Guilford CO., N.C. He was also a veteran of the US Air Force. Preceding Mr. Robey in death was his stepfather, Cliff Hardman. He is survived by his loving wife, Susannah Wilson Robey, of the home daughters, Stephenie Phillips, and husband, Danny, of Greer, Tami Preston, and husband, Evan, of Easley, Robbin Slock, and husband, Curtis, of Taylors, and Jennifer Nelson, and husband, Travis, of Travelers Rest grandchildren, Rachel, Rebekah, Matt and Alex Preston, Hannah and Heather Phillips, Taylor and Trevor Neslon and Anne and Lee Slock. Also surviving is his mother, Regena Hardman, of Charleston, W.Va. and a brother, Jerry Robey, of Taylors. Steve was smart and charismatic, yet quiet with a dry wit. He touched many along life's highway throughout his many travels associated with his work. He was loved by all and will be sorely missed by his family, friends and associates in the construction industry. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Mackey Mortuary, with the Rev. Daryle P. Bush officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland East Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the mortuary. He was a US Army veteran. Surviving in addition to his mother are by his wife, Tammi Elaine Robie Brabham, whom he married Jan 13, 1979 in Clearwater, Fla, four children, Timothy Paul Brabham of Gallipolis, Katherine Jean Brabham and Samantha Diane Brabham, both of the home and a son from a previous marriage, Kenneth Ray Brabham of Pinellas Park, Fla, and a brother, Dennis (Mary Jo) Brabham of Silver Springs, Fla. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, William Marcus Brabham, and a brother, Kenneth Mack Brabham. | 1850 | Thomas Hillery COOK was born 23 July 1844, in Lewis County, Va., now West Virginia. His early boyhood days were spent in Lewis and Jackson Counties with his parents. At the beginning of the rebellion he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served until the close of the war. He was united in marriage January 15, 1867, to Minervia E. FLESHER, a daughter of the late William B. FLESHER. To this union were born ten children, four boys and six girls, all of whom survive him, except one boy, who died in infancy. In the year 1875 he united with the Christian Church and remained a faithful member until his death, which occurred after a short illness of pneumonia which lasted only five days, April 11, 1911, at his home in Silverton, surrounded by loving relatives and friends, age 66 years, 8 months and 26 days.
